- ➤ After a train derailed near a Smyrna neighborhood on May 17th at 8:30 p.m., residents in the Quiet the Train group voiced concerns about poor rail maintenance — they say loud noise and shaking homes show a need for better safety measures from CSX and local officials. Fox 5 Atlanta
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Marietta police say a 56 year old woman with dementia, Elizabeth Jones, was reported missing at 8:00 p.m. on May 17 and was last seen on camera walking across the intersection of Austell Road and Cochran at 12:51 p.m.; anyone who sees her should call 911 immediately. Cobb County Courier
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ KSU announced that the Board of Regents approved a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering that will start in fall 2025+ The program will be housed in the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology and is designed to meet the growing local aerospace job demand+ WSB-TV
- ➤ A former special education teacher from Park Street Elementary, who was fired last year for unprofessional conduct, has filed an employment discrimination lawsuit against the Marietta Board of Education—she claims the termination was unjust. Marietta Daily Journal
- ➤ On Thursday, the Cobb school board approved a $1.86 million 2026 budget with a 7-0 vote while addressing concerns about bus fleet safety and maintenance raised at an earlier meeting—Superintendent Chris Ragsdale said the tight budget supports safe operations for 1,000 buses and other vehicles. The budget keeps the millage rate at 18.7 mills, provides eligible staff with a full step raise, and allocates nearly $1 million for new marketing materials—steps taken amid planned reassignments without layoffs.
