ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On July 4, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported that boating incidents on local waterways injured 18 people, issued 22 boating under influence citations and caused two deaths, with explosions on Lake Nottely and Lake Lanier injuring seven people each, a 13-year-old suffering a leg injury from a boat propeller, a capsized vessel at Allatoona Landing, a sinking near West Point Lake where five were rescued, and an 18-year-old struck by lightning on Lake Blue Ridge (all rescued), while the agency will send another update today.  Fox 5 Atlanta

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cobb County Courier has moved its Saturday and Sunday quizzes to its main website—each quiz now has ten questions focused on topics related to Cobb County—to help residents test and build their knowledge about Marietta. The change aims to better inform local citizens through engaging questions and follow-up learning links.  Cobb County Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On December 5th, 1837, engineer S.A. Long gave a report to Governor George Gilmer — outlining a plan for a railroad from the Chattahoochee River to the Tennessee line that would pass through Marietta and link to cities like Augusta and Macon. The report noted rough land and that most of the area was Cherokee land — it also mentioned crops and mines that could help new settlers.  Cobb County Courier
