COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pepper is a 1-year-old, black/white American Staffordshire terrier at Cobb County Animal Services in Marietta who needs a loving home, and the shelter now prefers pet visits by appointment (walk-ins welcome) at (1060 Al Bishop Drive) to manage staffing effectively.  Cobb County Courier
  • The Shaw Park Community Block Party will take place on July 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gritters Library on 880 Shaw Park Road— a community event planned for Marietta.  Marietta Daily Journal
  • Heidi is a female tabby domestic short hair kitten, 5 months old and weighing 5 lbs, available for adoption at Cobb County Animal Services Shelter in Marietta. The shelter now prefers appointments for pet visits + walk-ins will be assisted as needed.  Cobb County Courier
  • Each July, generations gather for the 187th Marietta Campmeeting — residents drive down a dirt road off Roswell Road to a field for ten days of scripture and sermons that spark a spirit of revival.  Marietta Daily Journal

  • The Marietta Cobb Museum at 30 Atlanta St. SE is housed in a historic building that once served as a post office and library and now shows American art and hosts community workshops—helping residents connect with art and culture. ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA's weekly report shows gasoline prices in Georgia remained at $2.90 per gallon for regular unleaded gas and EV charging rates held at 36 cents per kWh. The report also noted that Cobb County gas cost $2.922 per gallon—about two cents above the state average.  Cobb County Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Public school students in Marietta face a new law that restricts cell phone use during class for kindergarten through eighth grade, and teacher groups as well as parents worry about teachers having to enforce this rule—middle school students may struggle the most with the change. The law allows cell phones before and after school but bans them from the first bell to dismissal, sparking debate on how to balance learning and connectivity.  11Alive
  • Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta announced today an immersive reading program to help prevent the summer slide. With help from Carter’s Charitable Foundation Inc.—which provided over 200 girls a free book, guide, and patch—and a new tree bookshelf at Camp Timber Ridge, the program will offer activities to boost reading skills.  Cobb County Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Law enforcement in Georgia — along with officials in Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee — are enforcing Operation Southern Slow Down by targeting speeders and aggressive drivers on major highways until July 20. Agencies aim to reduce rising speeding-related fatalities in the region.  WSB-TV
