EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lions clubs from East Cobb, Smyrna Jonquil, Atlanta Latino and South Cobb screened nearly 600 students for vision problems at Nickajack Elementary on September 6 to catch issues early—staff arranged the event well. Later that week, nearly 300 students were screened at East Valley Elementary as part of the clubs' continuing vision care efforts.  Cobb County Courier
  • Yesterday, the Cobb County Courier launched a weekend quiz that asks readers to name local high school mascots and learn about the county's history—this quiz features ten questions compared to five in the daily version.  Cobb County Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia DOT announced that from September 8 to September 13 contractors will temporarily close lanes on I-285 and I-20 for work on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. Drivers should expect delays and follow posted signs to stay safe as crews add new ramps and collector lanes due to weather-related changes.  Cobb County Courier

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Awareness Walk for prostate cancer was held at Larry Bell Park in Marietta on September 6. Attendees received free health screenings — a measure to encourage early detection.  WSB-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Atlanta Braves hosted their annual Patriot Day 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Truist Park on Saturday, where over 530 participants, including first responders, climbed over 2,000 steps and wore lanyards with victim photos—proceeds helped fund the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund of Georgia.  WSB-TV
