CULTURE NEWS

  • The Strand Theatre is celebrating 90 years today after opening in 1935 with a 2 p.m. showing of Top Hat starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The venue will host films & festivities to honor the milestone and welcome the community.  Marietta Daily Journal
  • The Marietta Cobb Museum of Art will host Chalktoberfest on October 11-12 at Marietta Square—a free festival featuring chalk art, live music, local vendors, a Saturday craft beer tasting, and a Sunday chalk competition. The event will benefit museum programs and offer registration for the competition and tickets for the beer festival.  Cobb County Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kennesaw State University senior Deja Boney was named a 2025 Newman Civic Fellow—an award that honors students for leadership and commitment to service. She will join a national network of civic leaders and gain opportunities for community engagement.  Marietta Daily Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cobb County commissioners will consider extending the moratorium on student housing so that Kennesaw State University can finish its housing study—officials have not yet determined how long the extension will last. The measure was first approved in October 2024 and was last extended until Oct. 8.  WSB-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Public Health released health inspection scores for Cobb County restaurants, school cafeterias and other food service facilities from September 12th to 18th—scores ranged from 80 to 100 across establishments such as Zaxby’s and Panda Express.  Cobb County Courier
  • Today the Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of 85,184 bags of shrimp that may be contaminated with cesium—sold at Kroger and other stores in Georgia; consumers should return the product or dispose of it immediately. The recall is part of efforts to prevent contaminated seafood from entering commerce.  WSB-TV

  • The SEC released the future schedule showing the Bulldogs will play Florida, Auburn, and South Carolina each season while Tennessee will only be met twice—Georgia will not face Missouri until 2030.  11Alive
