CULTURE NEWS

  • Hanukkah celebrations kicked off Sunday night with family-friendly candle lightings and activities across metro Atlanta and in Marietta locals joined the Gelt Drop and Menorah Lighting at Avenue East Cobb at 5:30 p.m.  WSB-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Courier now offers a quiz that challenges residents to test their knowledge of Cobb County's cities; the daily newsletter version changes to a 10-question online quiz on Saturdays and Sundays with answer explanations.  Cobb County Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Waymo driverless car ignored a stopped school bus sign in metro Atlanta — prompting state officials and school groups to urge a pause until the company improves its software for school zones. Waymo said it will recall its system to address these errors.  11Alive
  • A 1926 Cordele Dispatch article reported that the Senate approved a commission to study turning the Kennesaw Mountain battlefield into a national military park. The commission — made up of one Army Engineer Corps member and two veterans from each side — was set to report its findings by next November with a $5,000 appropriation to cover expenses.  Cobb County Courier
  • Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper said the Hurricane Helene block grant program will soon open for farmers and ranchers impacted by last year’s $6.5 billion in losses (pending USDA approval). FEMA announced $350 million in aid to support relief efforts, and producers should check the department website for enrollment dates.  11Alive

  • Health inspection scores for Cobb County restaurants and food services were posted from Dec. 5 to Dec. 11. Most locations (including Marietta, Smyrna, and Austell) earned top scores while a few scored below 90.  Cobb County Courier

  • October home sales in the Pope High attendance zone showed that properties sold from $450,000 & $1,875,000, with records from the Cobb County Tax Assessor’s website detailing addresses, sale dates, and square footage.  Cobb County Courier
